God’s Hand of Protection Through People

This Sunday, we are in our series studying 1st Samuel, at chapter 19, verses 1-17.  Here we have God’s clear protection of David from King Saul who is trying again, to have him killed.  What is interesting here, is how God uses people (from Saul’s own family) to protect him.  And they actually use lies and deceit to protect David from their (Jonathan and Michal’s) father.  Jonathan connives and goes behind his fathers back to protect his friend.  And then, David’s wife, Michal uses lies and deceit to help her husband, David, to escape; misleading Saul’s soldiers with a humanlike idol and goats’ hair to buy David more time to escape.  So, what can we learn from this passage of scripture?  Certainly, that God protects David from a madman and that God can and will protect us.  But is lying and deceit ok to use to “help” God to protect us?  Can’t God just use His power to protect?  Shouldn’t we just trust His power?  Why is this kind of behavior used to protect David, and why is it recorded here especially after the previous chapter that shows the blessings on David for “behaving himself wisely.”  Is it ever right to do wrong to protect people, or ourselves? Shouldn’t we just trust God more?

In our scripture reading, Exodus 1:15-21, we read about the Hebrew midwives under orders from Pharoah to kill all the male babies.  The midwives choose to obey God instead, and God blesses them greatly for it.  They even lie about how the Hebrew women deliver so fast, and God uses their disobedience, lies and deceit to save many babies!  We’ll discuss all this Sunday morning, and get you discussing it too.

See you Sunday,

Pastor Weaver
