A New Way to Look at Sickness

This Sunday, in our series in the gospel of Matthew, we continue in chapter 8 looking at verses 14-17.  In this passage I believe Jesus gives us a new view of sickness as Matthew talks about how Jesus deals with and encounters the sick at Peter’s house in Capernaum.  Jesus is able to minister and heal many people including Peter’s mother-in-law.  The interesting part is verse 17 where the human author quotes Isaiah 53:4 and applies it to physical healing which, of course God can do and Jesus is doing in the text.  Physical healing is directly related to spiritual healing in this text.  Our topic for this Sunday is for us to tie together physical and spiritual healing and how it applies to our physical sicknesses today.

Our scripture reading is Luke 4:38-44.  This passage is the parallel account of our text and gives us some significant information about the demons being cast out during this time of Jesus’s healing in Capernaum.  In verse 41 Luke says that the devils were crying out and saying, “Thou art the Christ the Son of God” and Jesus was rebuking them and not even allowing them to speak; “…for they knew that He was the Christ.” the text tells us.  Our question then, for this study is, what are we learning from sickness?  Not just our own but other’s sickness?  And most importantly, have you been healed spiritually?  More on all this Sunday morning…

See you Sunday,

Pastor Weaver
