This Sunday we continue our series in the gospel of Matthew, where we now come to chapter 3 verses 1-6.  In this passage we are introduced to John the Baptist who is unusual, preaching and baptizing in the wilderness down by the river Jordan.  Everything about him is unique: his lifestyle, his birth, his calling, and baptisms; as well as his look, dress and diet.  And then we see his message, simple, short, yet powerful: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near!”  And people are flocking there responding, repenting and confessing their sins and being Biblically baptized (immersed) by John.  For this Sunday, there are some characteristics about John I think that we can learn about our life, our life’s path and how God can use us in helping people repent and turn from their sin and to be sure we have repented ourselves.

Our scripture reading is 2 Corinthians 7:8-13, a passage that talks about repentance and what it means as the concept and action of repentance is so often misunderstood.  More on all this Sunday morning.
