The Peril of Envy and Jealousy, 1 Samuel 18: 6-16

This Sunday, we are continuing our series in 1st Samuel, looking now at chapter 18 verses 6-16.  Here we have a lesson of how sinful jealousy/envy can destroy someone’s life, like Saul’s in this text.  The simple lesson is that we should be content with what God has given us and not wish for something someone else has (which is coveting), or something we don’t have.  We need to understand that envy destroys, leads to anger and bitterness, and to make sure that it is not in our lives.

In our scripture reading, Proverbs 14:29 – 15:3, King Solomon writes about basic principles: being slow to wrath, being righteous and full of wisdom; but also says to be of sound heart and don’t be envious because of where that will lead.  How do we keep sinful jealousy and envy out of our lives?  Be aware of it, be honest about it, and learn to be content; so that you can be Christlike and allow Christ to be your all and satisfy your every need.
