This Sunday, we continue our series in 1st Samuel, looking again at chapter 18 verses 1-5. Here we are told of Jonathan and David and their deep friendship. This will be the 2nd part of a 2-part message as we now get to the 6 principles of friendship in the text. The simple lesson again is that God designed friendship to enable us to see God’s goals accomplished in others. We now see how Jonathan and David are great examples of what it takes to be a good friend. They were not in it for themselves, but for what they could give. They show us that great friendships will have acceptance, attraction, commitment, openness, appreciative enjoyment and meeting needs. The principles that made their (Jonathan and David’s) friendship so great.
In our scripture reading, Esther 6:1-11, King Ahasuerus asks the wicked Haman what should be done to the man whom the king wishes to honor? Haman, thinking he is wanting to honor him, says to give him royal robes, let him ride in the king’s chariot around town. That is a portion of what Jonathan does for David, his true friend, his equal, whom he treats so selflessly. How can you have deep friendships? It starts with you!
