God’s Word Will Be Fulfilled, 1 Samuel 20 and 21

This Sunday, we continue our series preaching through the book of 1 Samuel.  We come to chapter 20 and 21.  In these 2 chapters we have David, the anointed, future king of Israel in a very difficult place as he now is on the run, running for his life, far from being king.  He runs to Nob, NE of Jerusalem, where the Eli family priests live.  There he asks for help, lies to protect Ahimelich and himself, and gets some food for his run from Saul.  Now, Saul is also down and also discouraged about his lot in life.  The difference is that he put himself there; his sinful disregard and disobedience of God and His word, his unwillingness to humble himself before God is the reason he is suffering.  The point is how each of these men end up.  Saul’s eventual end, and the work of the Lord eventually bringing David to the throne of Israel as king.  And also, God’s blessings on David, the sweet Psalmist of Israel.  In this message I want to talk about 3 lessons that we can learn from this most troubling story, and how God’s Word will always be fulfilled.

Our scripture reading this Sunday is from 1 Samuel 3:10-20.  This passage talks about the revelation given to young Samuel about the judgment on Eli’s house because of his son’s sins and that Eli didn’t do anything about the sinful behavior.  That promise is fulfilled in Doeg’s actions in our text, chapter 22.  Again, God’s Word will always be fulfilled!
