This Sunday, we will be in our series in 1st Samuel, chapter 17. A rather lengthy chapter about David and Goliath, one of the most well-known stories in the Bible. What can we learn from such a familiar passage of scripture? The simple lesson from this text is one that is not all that accurate, as people use it to say we can overcome our giants in life by human ingenuity, grit, and extra work. But is that what the text teaches? We can all agree nothing is impossible for God, but when will that power of God be used in our lives, with our giants? How are we handling the giants (problems) that we encounter. Here is where David becomes a good example, help, and inspiration for us. He gives simple principles that should be evident as a “giant problem” shows up in our lives. David shows us that it is God who does the saving and conquering of our giants.
In our scripture reading, Mark 10:17-27, Jesus states there that “with God all things are possible.” In the context there, He is speaking about His saving people that are rich in this life. But we also know that with God all things are possible including slaying a tough giant that seeks to destroy us.
