“But I Had To!”

This Sunday, we continue our series in the book of 1st Samuel, and are now at chapter 13, verses 1-14.  In this text we see Saul in more action as the new king.  His desire is to deal with these occupying Philistines in the country of Israel.  His son, Jonathan, has a very successful military defeat at their garrison at Geba.  A problem erupts as the Philistines hear about this and respond with a huge military presence (v.5).  As a result, the Israelites become extremely frightened.  Samuel had told Saul that he would be there in 7 days to offer the burnt offering for the Lord’s presence, help and direction in waging this war against the Philistines.  Saul however, panics and is losing people fast in the time he’s waiting for Samuel, so he lights and offers the burnt offering himself, against Samuel’s and God’s direct orders.  God’s expectation was that Saul obey and trust Him.  Sunday morning, I want to show you 5 points to unfold this important story where we can learn about the tragedy of disobedience.

In our scripture reading, James 4:10-17, we see the expectation that God has for us, particularly in verse 17: “Therefore to him that knoweth to do good and doeth it not to him it is sin.” that is, to do right, to be obedient.  What can happen when we don’t obey?  What can we learn about Saul’s disobedience and impatience?  We’ll talk about this and more Sunday morning!

See you then,

Pastor Weaver
