What Is Your Discipleship Costing You?, Matthew 8:18-22

This Sunday, we continue our series in the gospel of Matthew in chapter 8, looking at verses 18-22.  In this passage Jesus tells 3 people the true cost of discipleship!  His answers seem to be very short, sharp and abrupt, as He tells them what following Him (discipleship) really means.  Jesus has been ministering, teaching and healing and is ready for a break (v.18) when he asked by some who say they want to follow Him.  They are caught up in the excitement of this wonderful ministry and want to be part of it permanently – or so they think.  Our topic for this Sunday is discipleship, and most notably the cost of discipleship.  What does it mean to follow Christ today?

Our scripture reading is Luke 14:25-33.  This passage is another account of Jesus talking about the difficulty and dedication needed in discipleship.  In these verses, 3 times Jesus says “…he cannot be my disciple.”  Jesus outlines and illustrates in the passage the cost of being a disciple.  A most important consideration for us today.  Are you truly a follower of Jesus?  What exactly is it costing you?
