This Sunday, we continue our series on the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew’s gospel; and we’ll be studying chapter 5, verses 33-37. In this passage Jesus continues His teaching on the way to live; and dealing with questions of life and social issues of that day. Here Jesus talks about oaths and promises that, by His time, were being so abused with legalism and technicalities. Jesus again points to what the law says, and to what He says now because of the problem of the abuse of oaths. To which He says: don’t do oaths anymore just be people of your word; tell the truth, let you yes be yes, and your no be no. This Sunday we’ll talk about honesty and the seriousness of the promises we make, or we should not make!
