Jonathan & Saul, 1 Samuel 13:15-14:52

This Sunday, we continue our series in the book of 1st Samuel, and are again in chapter 13, looking at verse 15 through chapter 14.  In this long text we see a comparison the narrator makes between Saul and his son Jonathan.  Jonathan, a true spiritual man makes some amazing faith filled decisions in his desire to see Israel delivered from the pagan Philistines.  With only his armor-bearer, he goes over, defeats one of the Philistine outposts creating and wreaking havoc over all the Philistine camp.  God clearly works here even sending an earthquake that shakes them up even more.  Saul then enters the battle while making a rash, foolish vow for his men not to eat till his enemy is avenged (v.24).  As a result of the lack in calories his soldiers are faint and greatly weakened.  Meanwhile Jonathan, his son, eats honey in ignorance and, as a result, Saul is ready to kill his own son!  Saul just keeps doing one foolish thing after another.

Sunday morning, I will tell you the entire story making commentary where you will learn about how to be like Jonathan and NOT Saul.

In our scripture reading, Ephesians 4:22-32, we see a contrast of sin and righteous deeds.  Put off sin and put on right living.  Just like the narrator points out in our story of Saul & Jonathan in 1 Samuel 13 &14.  Who are you more like?  Saul, who talks a big talk while sinning; or Jonathan, faith filled and accomplishing much!
