This Sunday we look at the book (letter) of 3rd John. In this little note (not so much a letter) John talks about a specific problem person in this, the smallest book of the New Testament, even shorter than 2nd John in Greek words. He writes about Diotrephes and the harm he has done to his previous letter (2nd John), and his unwillingness to help traveling preachers. Diotrephes doesn’t even let anyone help these “missionaries” because he threatens to kick anyone out of the church who helps these itinerant preachers. John calls Diotrephes out for the slander and the evil speaking that he did against him. He calls him out publicly because he had slandered him publicly. In this letter, John also commends Gaius, who he is writing to, for all his faithfulness and service to the Lord. And then John also notes the testimony, the good report, and the example of Demetrius; who is the courier that delivers this note (letter) to Gaius. This is a story of a problem between two men that I thought would be best told by John himself! I imagine if John would tell us the story of 3rd John it would be explained how we will do it Sunday.
