This Sunday we continue in our series in the first epistle of John looking at chapter 3, verses 11-15. Here in these verses, John now speaks about something his audience has heard about before (v.11). They know that love is important, but here John is addressing the false teachers who had been teaching a conditional love (allowing anger, hate) toward others. Teaching that, if you have good reason you can hate, it’s ok. John though, is saying here that believers ought to, and must love, because hate is of the world and the devil. This is in continuing his theme of assurance (of salvation) and talking about tests that show, really tell you, that verify, yes, you have been born again! Here he says true Christians love, not hate. A true believer will not hate anyone. He explains this by reminding us of 3 points in this passage which will help us to love others especially loving those we don’t “like”!
