This Sunday and next (the 30th), we wrap up our series in first John looking at the end of chapter 5, verses 18-21. In this passage John now shifts gears from the previous verses – going from the terrible problem of sin to – in this conclusion – building up believers, reminding them of things that they [probably] already know. Three times “we know” and a 4th time, a slightly different Greek word meaning “we’ve come to know.” We’ve come to know, who? “Him that is true” where he says the word “true” 3 times in verse 20.
So, John says because of this, this and this we can know and have Him, that is Jesus. He reminds believers of truth (we know) in the text which are also throughout scripture. This Sunday and next we will look at 2 points (one each Sunday); reminders, that will build us up as believers. Plus, all this points back to what John said at the beginning of this epistle that Jesus has come and here He [present tense Greek] is still present. (John has come full circle in this letter of 1st John.) We are reminded and will talk about this Sunday: 1. That we are truly saved, and next Sunday: 2. That the Son has come.
