This Sunday we’ll break away from our series on James to focus on and celebrate the Lord’s supper. The text for this message is 1 Corinthians 11:17-34. In this passage Paul addresses the Lord’s supper and gives Christ’s instructions about it. Unfortunately, he has to confront the church of Corinth about their behavior in their so-called love feasts; which wasn’t showing any love at all (vs. 17-22). A love feast in the New Testament was a fellowship meal that was celebrated in conjunction with, and just before, the celebration of the Lord’s supper. But the problems in that church, the divisions, the cliques, the horrible treatment of the poor was all a real problem with the members and guests. Paul seeks to correct all that, and point out that Christ’s self-giving love stands in real contrast with how they were treating one another. He tells them to “examine themselves” (v. 28) or risk judgment (vs. 29-32)!
Is your behavior exemplary in how you treat others? Are you born again and right with the Lord? Are you prepared in your heart to take communion anytime, and to remember what Jesus, your Savior did for you on the cross of Calvary? More on this Sunday morning…
