This Sunday we continue our expository series in the first epistle of John. Our text this week is the last section of chapter 1, verses 8-10. Here in this passage John deals with the trouble the lost world has, as well as a problem some believers can have. The problem of lying to ourselves. How does John here say that we lie? We say that we are ok in our sin, even unknown sin. That we are just fine, just ok with God, just ok with others and then minimize sin and the half-heartedness in our lives. When, in fact, sin is the great problem of our lives. Because, if we say that we have no sin, we are a liar, we deceive ourselves, and eventually call (“make”) God a liar, which is very serious. But, as this passage shows us, Christ is the answer! If we confess, (agree with God about) our sin He (God) is faithful and just to forgive our sin, through the sacrifice of Christ on Calvary. Isn’t it possible for people to think they’re ok – but, in reality, are in serious trouble (not forgiven)? Are YOU honest with your relationship with God at this moment? As the Psalmist said: Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me and lead me in the way everlasting. (Psalm 139:23-24) Can you say that? Have you been cleansed by the blood payment of Jesus? Has God forgiven your sin?
