This Sunday, we take a break from our series on the Beatitudes and the sermon on the mount in the gospel of Matthew and focus on the cross and celebrating the Lord’s supper. Our text for this communion service is Galatians 6:11-18. In this text we see Paul the apostle summarizing and making emphasis (v. 11) of what he has been talking about in this letter to the Galatians. The problem he addresses is of those that would say that outward religious works would help them get to heaven, and then he mentions the follow up problem with their boasting in all that. He then says where our boasting ought to be – in the cross! Nothing else matters in this life. If we are to be rightly living our lives in Christ then nothing else matters in this life except the cross of Jesus Christ! What does the cross really mean to you? And think about the fact that the cross was an instrument of death! So, what does that tell us, or how does that encourage us? The answer is encouraging, and exciting as to what it all means.
