As we continue our verse-by-verse study in Matthew, on the Sermon on the Mount; we are now looking at chapter 7, verses 21-23. Jesus continues His expounding on the subject we looked at the last 2 weeks where Jesus was illustrating a person’s eternal path traveled – as it leads to 2 different destinations: life and destruction (vs.13-14).  The broad or narrow way.  The emphasis in our current text is on the narrowness of the way that leads to eternal life.  Jesus speaks of who will enter (v. 21) and of the problem of those who might think they’re entering but are really not.  Those who made some sort of profession, prayed a prayer, had some sort of religious experience, but never really began a relationship; never truly repented of their sin, and trusted Jesus Christ as their Savior.  What Jesus does here in our text, as He speaks primarily to believing Jews, is to challenge them to reevaluate and reexamine their hearts and lives.  Are you sure you have eternal life?  Because many in that day will SAY they are. (v. 22).  But Jesus will respond “I never knew you” (v. 23).  What a sobering thought that there are people who proclaim they know Christ, and even in some ways show that, but they are NOT really saved??  This Sunday, I want to challenge everyone “to test themselves to see if they be in the faith.” (2 Corinthians 13:5)
